Hannah Montana Games - Hannah Montana (DS)
The savvy executives of Disney Channel, riding on the popularity of Hannah Montana TV series came up with Hannah Montana (DS), a video game based on the same show. Hold on! Not all games with the word “video” attached to it (you’re thinking about Doom! Or one of those games with lots of gore and decapitated body parts, Right?) are violent. This is one of those Hannah Montana games that have less or no action (read: violent.)
MENTALLY STIMULATING, IF NOT EDUCATIONAL
Hannah Montana (DS) is a make-believe type of a video game (aren’t they all?) but in a harmless way since the story line takes off from the TV series itself that is known to be child-friendly. This game requires a lot of reading as it is necessary to solve some interactive mysteries. This is one of those Hannah Montana games where a participant plays Hannah, talk back to Jackson (her brother) to some mean girls at school. There are situations there where the value of honesty, diligence in school works, or skipping them, etc. are put to a test.
WITH SOME PARENTAL GUIDANCE, THIS COULD BE A TOOL IN CHARACTER BUILDING OF THE CHILD
The child who plays Hannah gets the chance to tell these errant kids to shape up, or otherwise. It would be worth the time of the parents, or at least employ the nanny, to guide the kids on some character-shaping decisions they may make as part of these Hannah Montana games. Note that the Hannah character in this video game labels herself as “mathematically deficient.” While this statement is neutral, this could be taken as defeatist and could send the wrong signal to children, that it is all right to be lagging behind in school. This may be true, but in some context, this could be taken as a wrong signal and could be counter-productive. Talk about motivating your kids.
As a parent, you sometimes find it difficult to convey some values to your kids, or you may sometimes feel you haven’t talked to them enough about these matters. Playing with your kids with one of these Hannah Montana video games like the Hannah Montana Nintendo (DS) could be a casual and natural way of imparting some “lessons” to your kids without appearing to “lecture.” You may talk about the story-line, like, is it possible to lead a double life? Be an ordinary kid at school by day, and be a pop superstar by night? You may even, without intending to and without much effort, be teaching them to develop critical thinking. You may ask questions like, “aren’t the paparazzis doing a good job at finding out more information about Hannah Montana? Why haven’t they found out yet about Miley?”
You may ask them how they felt when Amber and Ashley blocked and said harsh words to the kid who was playing Hannah Montana. Should Hannah fight back? Or should she be cool and continue to be nice? Do they have this kind of experience at school? What do they do when they see someone else being bullied?
Rule of thumb is: be careful not to sound like you are an anti-Hannah Montana, or that you are trying to destroy her image in their eyes. Failing to observe this tact would cause your kids to exclude you from the game. Worse, they may even resent you and will not listen to you anymore.
With a little imagination and intuitive handling, these Hannah Montana games could prove to be useful parenting tools.
