Hannah Montana fans do the “Hoedown Throwdown”
Now, this is better. We don’t only sing “Rockstar,” or “Best of Both Worlds,” or “Who Said” with our bffs (best friends forever, duh) to relate to our tween queen now. We can also do the “Hoedown Throwdown” dance! This is one of “Hannah Montana: The Movie’s” most memorable scenes.
Hannah Montana the Movie, Disney Channel’s latest dig in the pockets of hapless parents of pre-teens (and beyond) for 2009 seems to have discovered another good anchor at making this flick a blockbuster—dance. You know, not all kids can sing a la Hannah Montana, for sure. And if they can’t sing, dancing is the next best way of emulating the tween princess.
Hoedown Throwdown is a catchy, albeit bordering on becoming an earworm, tune that is fast taking the Miley Cyrus’ tweendom by storm. You just have to check out how the kids at school line-up to do the hoedown.
What’s a hoedown, you ask? It’s a square dance, says my redneck uncle. However, when I showed him the YouTube video of Miley Cyrus doing the Hoedown Takedown dance move for the “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” he says, it looks more like a line dance. Whatever.
As how square dances (that’s hoedown for you) are mostly done – which is by having someone call-in the moves (called the “square dance caller”), so does Hannah Montana. The girl-next-door Miley Stewart, who turns pop princess Hannah Montana at night, was sent by her Dad back to her hometown of Crowley Corners in Tennessee to learn some lessons in life.
In one local gathering, Miley does the job of the square dance caller by singing these lyrics:
Pop it, lock it, polka dot it, countrify then hiphop it,
Hawk in the sky, move side to side, jump to the left, stick it and glide
Zigzag across the floor, shuffle in diagonal, when the drums hit, hands on your hips
One foot in 180 twist
And then zigzag, step aside, lean it left, clap three times
Shake it out, head to toe, throw it all together
That’s how we roll.
So, let’s roll! Here’s the step by step instruction as given by Jamal Sims, Miley Cyrus’ choreographer.
“Pop it” – Pop with your left arm by extending it as far as it can go.
“Lock it” – Drop to your right to lock it.
“Polka dot it” – Shuffle with your left foot to polka dot it.
“Countrify it” – It’s right heel then left heel (like how you do it in a line dance).
“Hiphop it” – hit with your right foot and do the hippity-hop
You know, just looking at how it is done step by step as taught by the choreographer, it looks silly easy. However, try doing it with the actual song that goes with the cadence of about 112 beats per minute, and everything goes bonkers – unless you have been dancing, or have been practicing how to dance. Sorry for you if you expected something from this track from “Hannah Montana: The Movie” as easy as what you get to dance during one of those good ol’ country western barn dance. If this is the case, you can always turn to the good ol’ chicken dance.
